about

Karin Iturralde Nurnberg (she/they) (b. 1992 Guayaquil) is a visual artist currently working in Amsterdam. In her practice she embraces storytelling, improvisation and the power of spontaneous performative and sculptural interventions to approach, negotiate and re-arrange the world around her.  Materials are often find at hand and span widely from paper tape, food scraps, napkins, bamboo, textile, toilet paper and mobile-phone photo documentation. Her works find a red thread through words in titles, descriptions and stories, following a tradition in fluxus and conceptual art that she likes to call ‘conceptual sloppy’.

Karin finds performative curiosity in the subtle daily frictions among different authorities, whether they are systemic, social, or personal like her mom. These agents often find their way into her works as collaborators, as she attempts to rearrange power structures by suspending them, if only for a moment, in creative acts. She has previously convinced an immigration officer to stamp a lottery ticket with an immigration stamp for her in Schipol airport, organized a choreographed photo with strangers in the waiting room of passport office in Guayaquil, allowed her mother to dress her the way she wants for Xmas and created a paper tape installation beneath the tray table of the airplane between Amsterdam and Guayaquil. Following a few artwork attempts in the actual airplane she has grown interested in the cabin as a space to be inhabited and is currently developing works featuring the airplane cabin as a catalyst for stories about perspective and suspension.

Iturralde Nurnberg holds a BA in Fine Arts from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, and her work has been shown, among others at MAAC, Guayaquil, CAC, Quito, W139, Amsterdam, Systema, Marseille, Somalgors 74, Tschlin, Marwan, Amsterdam, puntWG, Amsterdam and Moezeum, Rotterdam. She is part of artist run space WILLIE in Zaandam and was nominated for the Sybren Hellinga Award in 2025.
